The unprecedented levels of racist rioting across the UK over the last few days is utterly deplorable. It is devastating that the tragic crime committed in Southport continues to be associated with ongoing violence against people of colour. It is contemptuous of the grief experienced by the families and of the Southport communities affected.
These horrific events have affected many communities throughout our local area and nationally. We recognise the significant impact of these events, and of the different ways this may be felt by different communities, whether at home, at work or in the community.
All Nations Community Centre condemn the violent disorder perpetrated. As many others have already highlighted, we recognise that the violence is deeply rooted in racism and xenophobia, and we condemn the rhetoric that has emerged from these attacks. Additionally, we are keen to listen to, and work with, both local and national partners on initiatives to support communities, and to continue to support communities and the great work they do.
ANCC is also aware that many of our members will be looking for resources to address the more immediate concerns of our communities, to keep everyone as safe as possible and to protect those most at risk. We would like to share and support Stand Against Racism and Inequality’s (SARI) statement regarding these recent acts of violence:
SARI have also released guidance for those asking what they can do to help here: https://saricharity.org.uk/what-can-you-do/
You can contact SARI and other appropriate local organisations using the following details:
· Stand Against Racism & Inequality (SARI) - 0117 942 0060
· SWAN Advocacy: Victims of Crime Advocacy Service - 03333 44 7928
As always, call 999 if you or someone else is in immediate danger.
Finally, to echo what our local and national partners have said, that these acts of hostility do not represent our communities. We have been heartened to see the community response and calls of support to those affected, and encourage people to consider ways to support community in the positive work it does, alongside various national bodies providing clear statements on these recent events found here:
Black South West Network:
Civil Society Group:
We will keep you updated of more resources as they become available, with the charity commission soon to be releasing guidance.
There will be a large amount of work being done in the coming weeks by our community as a result of these acts of violence and hate. ANCC will use our voice to make sure this work is seen and heard as we continue to work towards a more tolerant and anti-racist society.
